Generative AI tools policy

Generative AI and AI-Assisted Tools Policy

This policy provides guidelines for the transparent and responsible use of generative AI and AI-assisted tools across all stages of manuscript preparation, analysis, and writing. The policy applies to all authors, reviewers, and editors. This policy will be periodically revised in accordance with technological advancements in generative AI and international publishing standards.

For Author
Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. AI tools lack the ability to fulfil authorship criteria, assume accountability, and ensure scientific integrity. Full responsibility for the content remains only with the human authors.

Authors may use generative AI and AI-assisted tools for limited, supporting tasks under strict human oversight and independent verification. Permissible uses include:

  • Language Refinement: Polishing text, correcting grammar, and improving overall readability.
  • Document Formatting: Aligning reference styles and structuring manuscript templates.
  • Code & Debugging: Generating or troubleshooting code, provided the author thoroughly tests and validates the output.
  • Visual & Tabular Enhancements: Refining figures and tables, provided the author confirms all data and details are accurate.

Responsibilities of Reviewers and Editors
Human decision remains essential in all editorial processes, and reviewers and editors may use generative AI tools only for:

  • Language assistance or summarization of author responses.
  • Enhancing clarity in decision recommendations.

Reviewers are not allowed to use generative AI to:

  • Evaluate scientific quality or originality.
  • Make publication decisions.

Prohibited Uses of Generative AI

  • Generating scientific interpretations or results.
  • Creating or altering data, images, or figures in a way that may mislead scientific accuracy.
  • Generating a large paragraph of the manuscript without human oversight.
  • Using AI to bypass originality checks or to fabricate citations, references, or sources.

Declaration of Generative AI in scientific preparation of manuscript (Mandatory)

The use of generative AI in scientific writing must be declared by the authors in the submission step. Only in the writing process should generative AI and AI-assisted technologies be applied to enhance the language and readability of the manuscript. Generative AI technologies must not be utilized to analyse, discuss, and derive conclusions from data as part of the research process.

The usage of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing must be expressed by adding a statement at the end of the manuscript when the paper is first submitted. The statement is to be added in a separate section before the references list and will be shown in the published article. The basic editing and formatting tools, such as tools used to check grammar, spelling, and the organization of references, are not considered generative AI or AI-assisted tools (services).

Suggested example for the declaration statement:

  • Title of new section: Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process.
  • Statement: Throughout the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) have used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] to [REASON]. The author(s) evaluated and corrected the text as needed following the use of [NAME TOOL / SERVICE], therefore assuming full responsibility for the content of the published article.

AI-generated images and graphs are generally not permitted unless legally disclosed in captions and reviewed.

Data Privacy and Confidentiality
To preserve confidentiality, authors, reviewers, and editors must not submit unpublished manuscripts, peer review reports, or editorial data to AI tools that retain or reuse user inputs. Supporting tasks are strictly limited to AI tools that explicitly guarantee zero data retention.
